Chapter Thirteen

Callie knocked on the apartment door. Iris answered, her eyes sparkling a clear blue in an unusually animated face.

"Hi, Miss Callie. Come on in. Sam's almost ready to go to the," she raised her voice in mid-sentence, "place where all the stores are."

Callie frowned at Iris in confusion. "The place where all the stores are?"

Samantha carried Bobbie into the living area. "Ignore her, she's trying to be cute," Sam explained. "She was so excited about going to the mall this morning I finally told her if I heard the word mall come out of her mouth one more time, we'd leave her here."

"Well, we haven't been there in months," Iris pointed out with a pout.

The older girl followed her own advice and ignored her sister, her eyes focused on the bag in Callie's hand. "Is that the dress you told me about?"

Callie sat down on the couch and opened the bag. "I thought we'd wait until later to dress her, but we need to make sure I guessed right on her size." She held the mint green dress up for inspection. The tiny skirt had three layers of ruffles topped by a bodice embroidered in a bouquet of small, multicolored flowers. There were matching socks and a headband attached. "Do you like it?"

"Ohh." Samantha took the dress from Callie, holding it up to get a better look. "It's perfect. She's going to look beautiful. Thank you so much!" The young mother paused. "She'll need new shoes."

"We can pick up a pair once we get to the mall."

"I'll find her a pair of shoes at the mall," Sam corrected her. "You've done way too much for us already."

"Whatever works for you is fine with me. I'm glad you like the dress as much as I do."

"It's a really great dress, Miss Callie." Iris turned toward the door in a transparent attempt to get the two older women to follow. "Can we go now?"

Samantha watched her sister walk out their door. "I'm sorry," she apologized. "I gave her twenty dollars last night. She's impatient to get to the bookstore."

Callie put Bobbie's dress back in the bag. "You don't have to explain anything to me. Don't forget I have a granddaughter just like her. If April didn't get out to the mall at least once a month, her whole social structure would probably collapse."

They followed the younger girl out the door and stopped short. Iris already had Bobbie's car seat out of Sam's car. She leaned against Callie's car, her foot tapping a rapid beat.

Callie laughed and nudged Samantha down the walk. "I think we should hurry. This may be the worst case of mall withdrawal I've ever seen."

Iris bounced from foot to foot, impatient to get to the fun stuff. She loved her niece, but pictures with a dorky looking, six-foot Easter bunny just didn't interest her. She could almost hear the bookstore calling her name. "Can I go now?"

Sam shook her head. "Wait for us."

Iris rolled her eyes and shuffled forward two feet as the next person in line got their bunny time.
